Arkitekter siger fra over for folkemordet i Gaza
Kære alle
Vi er en gruppe praktikere, forskere, undervisere og studerende fra det danske arkitektur- og designmiljø, som har skrevet et åbent brev i solidaritet med det palæstinensiske folk og deres ret til liv.
Brevet er rettet mod den danske regering og rejser de samme krav som kunstnere, filmfolk, musikfolk, socialrådgivere, journalister, forfattere, filosoffer og andre faggrupper allerede har rejst i de seneste måneder.
Brevet med underskrifter sendes til regeringen, og er desuden tilgængelig her på hjemmesiden, hvor underskrifterne løbende vil blive opdaterede. Derudover er målet at få det publiceret i et større, landsdækkende medie.

Til hele den danske regering og Folketinget.
Vi, underskriverne af dette brev, beskæftiger os til dagligt med arkitektur, design, byplanlægning og landskabsarkitektur. Som fagpersoner, der arbejder med at forme de miljøer, der danner grundlag for menneskers liv, føler vi et ansvar for at sige fra over for de omfattende og dokumenterede israelske forbrydelser mod den palæstinensiske civilbefolkning og destruktionen af deres livsgrundlag.
Siden oktober 2023 har Israel helt eller delvist ødelagt over 70% af Gazas bygninger ved bombning og planlagt nedrivning. Boliger, skoler, hospitaler, flygtningelejre, institutioner, bygninger af høj kulturel værdi, infrastruktur og landbrugsarealer er udslettet.
Israelske soldater fortæller selv, at de siden efteråret 2023 systematisk har ødelagt civile bygninger og infrastruktur i Gaza. Ifølge det internationalt anerkendte forskningskollektiv Forensic Architecture, som ved hjælp af arkitektur og digitale analyseredskaber undersøger og dokumenterer menneskerettighedskrænkelser, tyder Israels fremfærd i Gaza på en systematisk og organiseret kampagne for at ødelægge liv, livsbetingelser og livsopretholdende infrastruktur. Systematisk ødelæggelse af civile bygninger er i strid med den humanitære folkeret og er et brud på krigens love.
Siden dets folkeretsstridige besættelse af de palæstinensiske territorier i 1967, har Israel ulovligt besat og annekteret stadig mere palæstinensisk land og underlagt Gaza og Vestbredden brutal militær kontrol med checkpoints, beslaglæggelser af palæstinensisk ejendom, tvangsflytninger, vilkårlige drab og fængsling af børn og voksne uden rettergang.
I snart to år har Israel – med militær, økonomisk, politisk og retorisk støtte fra USA og en række vestlige stater, herunder Danmark – bombet, dræbt, udsultet og fordrevet palæstinenserne i Gaza. Israel blev allerede i december 2023 indklaget for folkemord ved Den Internationale Domstol (ICJ), og en lang række folkemordseksperter og internationale humanitære og menneskerettighedsorganisationer har siden vurderet, at Israel begår folkemord i Gaza.
Vi er forfærdede over Israels grusomme overgreb og vil ikke se stiltiende til.
Vi kræver handling
Ved at undlade at iværksætte tiltag til at stoppe Israels krigsførelse, har Danmark i snart to år forsømt at leve op til sin forpligtelse under folkedrabskonventionen om at forebygge folkemord.
Vi kræver, at regeringen bruger sin politiske magt etisk, forsvarligt og i henhold til internationale konventioner. Ord kan ikke stå alene. Vi kræver konkrete handlinger, der reelt kan bidrage til at stoppe Israels brutale overgreb på palæstinenserne.
Vi gentager og tilslutter os de krav som en række andre faggrupper i Danmark allerede har stillet:
- Danmark skal anerkende Palæstina som en selvstændig stat.
- Danmark skal stoppe al våbenhandel med Israel, både køb og salg – også den indirekte som følge af F-35-samarbejdet.
- Danmark skal modtage sårede palæstinensere fra Gaza til behandling, fordi vi har et medansvar.
- Danmark skal via sit medlemsskab i FNs sikkerhedsråd arbejde for, at samtlige medlemslande støtter op om ICC og ICJ’s domme, herunder arrestordrer og vejledende retningslinjer vedrørende Israels ulovlige besættelse af palæstinensisk territorium.*
- Danmark skal via sin formandspost i EU aktivt arbejde for en ophævelse af EU’s associeringsaftale (den aftale, som har formet handelsrelationen mellem EU og Israel i de seneste 25 år), indtil Israel:
- Stopper krigshandlingerne i Gaza og ophæver blokaden.
- Sikrer frie og sikre arbejdsforhold for nødhjælpsarbejdere.
- Sikrer fri og sikker adgang for international presse.
- Stopper annekteringen af Vestbredden og ophæver den ulovlige besættelse af de palæstinensiske områder.
Vi appellerer yderligere til, at Danmark tager sit ansvar for den ødelæggelse og traumatisering, som er påført palæstinensernes liv og livsgrundlag, ved aktivt og konstruktivt at støtte op om genopbygningen af Gaza og beskyttelse af palæstinensisk land og folk.

Architects Denounce the Genocide in Gaza

We are a group of practitioners, researchers, educators and students from the Danish architecture and design community. We write the open letter below in solidarity with the Palestinian people and their right to life.
The signed letter is to be sent to the Danish government. It echoes the demands made in recent months by artists, filmmakers, musicians, social workers, journalists, writers, philosophers and several other professional groups.
Our goal is to have this letter published in national media. It is also available on this website, where signatures will be updated regularly.

To Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S), Minister for Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M), Minister for Defence Troels Lund Poulsen (V), Minister for Culture Jakob Engel-Schmidt (M), Minister for Higher Education and Science Christina Egelund (M), Minister for Social Affairs and Housing Sophie Hæstorp Andersen (S), Minister for Environment and Gender Equality Magnus Heunicke (S). To the entire Danish Government and the Danish Parliament.
We, the signatories of this letter, work daily with architecture, design, urban planning and landscape architecture. As professionals who work to shape the environments that form the basis of people’s lives, we feel a responsibility to speak out against the extensive and documented Israeli crimes against the Palestinian civilian population and the destruction of their livelihoods.
Since October 2023, Israel has completely or partially destroyed over 70% of Gaza’s buildings through bombing and planned demolition. Homes, schools, hospitals, refugee camps, institutions, buildings of high cultural value, infrastructure and agricultural land have been laid waste.
Soldiers from the Israeli military itself declares that since autumn 2023 it has systematically destroyed civilian buildings and infrastructure in Gaza. According to the internationally recognized research collective Forensic Architecture, which uses architecture and digital analysis tools to investigate and document human rights violations, Israel’s actions in Gaza indicate a systematic and organized campaign to destroy lives, living conditions and life-sustaining infrastructure. Systematic destruction of civilian buildings is in violation of international humanitarian law and wholly contravenes the laws of war.
Since its illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories in 1967, Israel has continued to illegally occupy and annex further Palestinian land. It has subjected Gaza and the West Bank to brutal military control, with checkpoints, confiscation of Palestinian property, forced displacement, arbitrary killings and the imprisonment of children and adults without trial.
For nearly two years, Israel – with military, economic, political and rhetorical support from the United States and a number of Western states, including Denmark – has bombed, killed, starved and displaced the people of Gaza. Israel was charged with genocide at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in December 2023. Many scholars of genocide and international humanitarian and human rights organizations have since assessed that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.
We are appalled by Israel’s cruel abuses and will not stand idly by.
We demand action
By failing to take steps to stop Israel’s hostilities, Denmark has, for almost two years now, failed to live up to its obligation under the Genocide Convention to prevent genocide.
We demand that the government use its political power ethically, responsibly and in accordance with international conventions. Words are insufficient. We demand concrete actions that can truly contribute to a cessation of Israel’s brutal assault on the Palestinian people.
We reiterate and support the demands already made by a number of other professional groups in Denmark:
- Denmark must recognize Palestine as an independent state.
- Denmark must stop all arms trade with Israel, both purchases and sales – including indirect ones as a result of the F-35 cooperation.
- Denmark must receive wounded Palestinians from Gaza for treatment, since we share responsibility for their plight.
- Denmark must, through its membership in the UN’s Security Council work to ensure that all member states support the ICC and ICJ’s judgments, including arrest warrants and guidelines regarding Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territory.*
- Denmark must, through its presidency of the EU, actively work to repeal the EU Association Agreement (the agreement that has shaped the trade relationship between the EU and Israel for the past 25 years) until Israel:
- Stops the hostilities in Gaza and lifts the blockade.
- Ensures free and safe working conditions for aid workers.
- Ensures free and safe access for the international press.
- Ends both the annexation of the West Bank and the illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories.
We further appeal to Denmark to take responsibility for the destruction and trauma inflicted on the lives and livelihoods of the Palestinians by actively and constructively supporting the reconstruction of Gaza and the protection of Palestinian land and people.
